10/23/2009 – The Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles Boy’s Varsity Football defeated Sheridan Blackhawks team. The score was 30 to 13 in a playoff contest played at .

SHERIDAN, Ind. — Guerin Catholic continued its late-season surge and sent Sheridan home early from the IHSAA Class A playoffs for the first time in five years with a commanding 30-13 victory to open Sectional 37 play on Oct. 23. Guerin (4-6) advances to host Clinton Prairie (5-4) in the sectional semifinals on Oct. 30, while Sheridan sees its season end at 2-9 after reaching the Class A state championship game the past four years.

Guerin, under first-year head coach Andrew Kremer, took control with three lightning-quick touchdowns late in the second quarter. Senior running back Steven Haas took a screen pass from sophomore quarterback Colin Shanteau 62 yards for the first score to make it 7-0. The Golden Eagles then executed a perfect onside kick, with sophomore Connor Howard recovering. That led to a 3-yard TD run by junior fullback Phil Pecoraro and a 14-0 advantage.

Guerin struck yet again after junior VaDoll Babb picked off a Sam Zachery pass near midfield with less than a minute remaining before the half. A long pass from Shanteau to Howard set up Shanteau’s 1-yard tocuhdown sneak as the clock expired, and the Golden Eagles led 20-0 at the break.

Sheridan closed within 20-13 early in the fourth quarter, following a pair of Eric Price TD runs, but Guerin salted away the win with a 29-yard field goal from sophomore Shelby Evans and Haas’ 85-yard touchdown run following an impressive defensive stand from the Eagles. Haas finished with 162 rushing yards to go with his 62-yard TD reception.

Guerin has now won four in a row after losing its first six games against a brutal schedule. The combined record of those first six opponents, which includes top-ranked Cardinal Ritter (2A) and Lafayette Central Catholic (A), is 41-18.
